Case Study. Riot Games Documentary.

 
 

Riot Games needed a videographer on call in Los Angeles for 3 months to capture moments with talent and production in the lead up to their 2019 WORLDS Opening Ceremony for the League of Legends Championship game in Paris, France.

The moments were not going to be schedule-able far enough in advance to hire a videographer per day, so we engineered a way to have a videographer on standby via a weekly rate. The story was unknown as we began; but we knew the project thesis, we were generally curious and we were willing to roll with the punches every step of the way. After the event in Paris, we transitioned into director/editor mode and spent 3 months organizing the footage, discovering the narrative arc, and constructing a 22 minute documentary which would both inform and entertain the League of Legends audience.

The doc surpassed 1 million views shortly after its first week on YouTube and has received rave reviews via the comments section. Through this documentary, League of Legends was able to share the human cost of their Opening Ceremony efforts and further the audience connection to the most anticipated League of Legends event. If Riot Games did not have the foresight to begin capturing behind the scenes early enough, they wouldn’t have had the assets needed to tell this story well.
